The Logistics Manager is responsible for the movement of out-bound distribution to our customers, in such a manner that meets or exceeds their expectations by utilizing the best value transportation providers. This position must possess the ability to initiate and implement procedures based on the business plan and may support more than one business unit depending on proximity taking advantage of scale for best pricing and service routes.  This position is responsible for managing logistics activities for both our Mendon, MI and Hagerston, IN, while officed out of our Mendon, MI location.  


Logistics and Distribution

  • Organizes the daily flow of shipments for cost effective, timely deliveries, pool, LTL, T/L and expedited
  • Gathers competitive carrier pricing and other pertinent transportation information and report it to management; makes recommendations regarding negotiations with carriers for approval.  May take a lead in negotiating carrier contracts. 
  • Maintains carrier contracts providing price protection among other rules of commerce
  • Continuously improve methods and procedures that will improve the distribution function
  • Reports trends and direction of the transportation industry as they affect our business plan to management
  • Prepares KPI reports, maintains dashboards and reporting mechanisms, insuring accuracy and timely reporting, evaluating freight costing procedures, one time deliveries and other key metrics
  • Files freight claims in a manner to protect our interests
  • May play an active role in scheduling production/orders to manufacturing equipment, depending on location’s needs.
  • May coordinate carrier availability and ensure timely and accurate shipping documents based on production schedules and product availability.
  • Negotiate, purchase and maintain inventories of production and shipping supplies.
  • Negotiate, purchase and maintain inventories of internal and external skid order requirements.
  • May oversee activities related to warehousing and inventory storage, depending on location’s needs. 

Leadership and Problem Solving

  • Applies problem solving principles in assignments, projects and solution selections ensuring optimization of processes and problem resolution.
  • Applies knowledge base in Lean concepts, with a demonstrated ability to effectively participate in problem solving activities to drive continuous improvements in are of responsibility. May occasionally lead problem solving groups. 
  • Advises management of all issues that may inhibit expected job performance
  • Acts in a manner consistent with company values and attitudes
  • Must be able to maintain security of pricing information, carrier rates and other pertinent information
  • May oversee, directly or indirectly, supporting staff.  Gives timely performance feedback and may conduct formal performance reviews.
  • Assists operations and logistics teams in troubleshooting orders that require special handling. Responds to carrier inquiries and problem solving in a professional and effective fashion.
  • Impacts the company’s bottom line by problem solving; fosters a culture of quick and positive response amongst the team.



  • Logistics Degree or minimum 5 years equivalent work experience in the logistics field
  • A demonstrated understanding of the transportation industry and the ability to negotiate with carriers strongly preferred
  • Verifiable experience with the use of transportation tracking and scheduling tools strongly preferred


  • Strong detail-orientation required, with high degrees of accuracy
  • A working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office products – Intermediate Excel skills strongly desired
  • Strong organizational, communication skills written and oral
  • Work well in a team environment

  • Ability to speak and understand English

Illustrative Essential Functions:

  • Some mental, visual, physical fatigue from computer terminal use
  • Mix of office and manufacturing plant environments
  • Frequent presence in manufacturing environment involving high-speed equipment, high noise levels, heat, and cold and mill environments
  • Ability to sit for most of an 8 hour shift
  • 45+ hours/week
  • Occasional extra hours to meet work demands
  • Lifting & bending; carrying suitcases, brief case, entry and exit of various aircraft, buses, taxis etc.
